ENTRENCHED divisions in the Anglican Church in Ballarat are endangering its future while complaints of bullying against the bishop are investigated, says a group of concerned parishioners.
Up to 10 parishes have no priest and congregational numbers are plummeting, with attendance at the cathedral dropping by 75 per cent, they say. Both sides of the divide - Bishop Michael Hough and his supporters, and the clergy and laypeople who complained about his alleged bullying and harassment - are concerned at the time the investigation of the complaints is taking.
The Episcopal Standards Commission, which handles complaints against Anglican bishops, announced in July it would investigate 13 complaints from past and present clergy and laypeople made in late 2008. If they are upheld, Bishop Hough might be removed.
